A simple set of questions can lead a system administrator to think how to plan a Disaster Recovery.
- What Data is critical or Important for your business?
- What is the total size of the data?
- At what size that critical data is getting increasing day to day basis?
- What device you have shortlisted for your business critical backup?
- What is the frequency of the backup?
- What is the frequency to test the backup process?
- How frequently you are restoring the data?
- What about the Configuration?
- Will the Backup files have the critical server configuration files?
- What is the procurement time for new hardware, in case of hardware failure?
- How much time it needs to (re) configure the new server from zero?
- Have you updated and kept the documentation to install the customize OS and application ready?
- Are you using any tool or software to make the clone of the OS?
- Is any Replication, Synchronization of the system/data in place?
- How much data you afford to lose? In technical term, it is known as Recovery Point Object (RPO).
- How much restoration time do you need to get the business back on track? In technical term its called Recovery Time Object (RTO).
If you know the answer to all or most of the above questions, then you are on the right path to prepare your business for Disaster Recovery.
The Disaster Recovery (DR) is an area of security planning that aims to protect an organization, businesses from the effects of significant negative events including hacking, cyber attack, militant attack or war or any other natural disasters like, fire, flood, lighting, earth quick or any other which human doesn't have any direct or indirect control over.
There are many ways and methods to plan the Disaster Recovery, all depend on the business to business. You can not plan to have the backup of everything, but as a System Administrator, you need to have a plan for the worst situation in mind for better availability of the data.
The cloud can be a perfect location if anyone can use the Cloud storage for Disaster Recovery.
The benefits of the Cloud Storage are
Cost
Cost effective compared to the traditional way to do the disaster and backup using the LTO, or Media Backup device. The Cost you need to pay to the cloud service provider is as you use the space, whereas here company may need to use the CapEx to make the backup solution work in premises. Operation cost will be down as the Cloud service comes with the lowest maintenance cost to keep the data on cloud storage.
Unlimited Storage
There are limitations of the storage capacity when we use any LTO or Media backup solution. Whereas the Cloud service providers are providing the unlimited storage capacity.
Availability
In case of any disaster happen the time to restore the data from the local media devices may take time compare with the availability of the data on the cloud and getting it download using the high-speed internet to your local server is effortless.
Durability
Any media has a life, the backup media may get incompetent to store the data, even sometimes failed to recover the data from the same device. Here the Cloud solution can be handy and useful as the Clou storage service comes with the guaranteed high durability of the stored data.
Performance
The moving the data to the cloud is all depend on the internet connectivity and/or tools to connect the on-premise infrastructure to the Cloud, like VPN or Storage Gateway services from The Cloud service providers.
The Cloud services like AWS, Azure, IBM Bluemix, Google Cloud etc are providing options to use their cloud for the Disasater Recovery plan. Please find the article 'HERE' to know, how to use the AWS Cloud for Disaster Recovery.
