Today, all Cloud Service Provides are offering combination of IaaS, PaaS and SaaS.
1. Infrastructure as a Services (IaaS)
This is the simplest way of the cloud with basic compute and storage.
2. Platform as a Service (PaaS)
There are services or custom build application or tools are available along with the simple Compute services. These tools and applications are meant to make developers life easy. It's like jig saw puzzle with the Cloud services available.
3. Software as a Service (SaaS)
The Cloud is no more "Fancy or Fad" as it was described by Microsoft and many other giants in mid-2000. Hence the advantage goes to Amazon and
Jeff Bezos, to launch the AWS cloud in 2006. There was very limited offering of Compute and storage then, but in last 8-9 years AWS changed the Cloud Market and Offerings. When AWS first launched, it was only for basic compute Elastic Cloud Compute (AWS EC2) and Simple Storage Service (AWS S3). It was good enough for developers to run their simple website at cheapest cost. AWS invented this cloud market since then.
Today, AWS has more than 70+ services in their cloud, including computing, storage, networking, database, analytics, application services, deployment, management, mobile, developer tools, and tools for the Internet of Things. The most popular include Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) and Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3). Most services are not exposed directly to end users, but instead offer functionality through APIs for developers to use in their applications. Amazon Web Services’ offerings are accessed over HTTP, using the REST architectural style and SOAP protocol.
Most of the companies are moving to AWS due to the price and features. The
list of thes companies getting long, but the brands like Netflix, Airbnb, Autodesk, Docker, GE and Slack are using most of the features of AWS Cloud.
The Startups are moving to cloud and the number are growing everyday. It shows AWS is very lucrative compare to any other cloud service available in Market.
Microsoft Azure
The real cloud is providing the high speed compute with lowest cost. Microsoft was working on this concept in mid-2000, but unable to see the future in cloud. They realize this mistake in 2009 and launch the 'Windows Azure' cloud platform in mid 2010. Being pioneer in cloud, AWS has expanded the cloud way beyond just computing and now Microsoft is following the suite to catch the AWS.
To being in the business and success, you need to convert your weakness into strengths. Microsoft is on path to make the Cloud is prime feature of Microsoft revenue. When Windows Azure was launched it was only for Windows Operating systems, but now changing the name and business model, Microsoft Azure is ready for Developers favourite Linux and other open source technologies.
The recent launch of the
Azure Stack, will change the game for Microsoft in coming years. The Hybrid cloud platform will attract the other Industries who are shying away from the public cloud. Microsoft's key advantage isn't necessarily in technology, but rather in its established distribution network and customer base. Microsoft is offering a big discounts and incentives to try the Azure for all existing customers. This will increase the number of customer for Microsoft Azure.
This change came after CEO
Satya Nadella supports the Cloud Technology, this is completely opposite of the Ex-CEO
Steve Ballmer who used to said the Cloud is "
a Cancer".
Microsoft release the numbers, $18.9 billion revenu from Microsoft cloud, but this include the Azure and Office 365 combine. Still the path for Microsoft looks good and future is all about the Azure and AWS.
Google Cloud
Everyone knows the Google and what Google can do with cloud. Google change the SaaS market when Gmail (Google Apps) open for enterprise customers. Billions of people are trusting Google Cloud and sharing data on Google Cloud Services like Gmail, Youtube and other Google services. Still when it comes Cloud Compute, The technology giant is lagging to impress the customers.
Knowing the fact Google is unable to impress customer for Google Cloud, Google hired
Diane Greene, a so-called 'Queen of the Silicon Valley' and the former VMware Co-Founder to shape the Google Cloud for public. The results are slow but Google is taking a good leap in Cloud now. It is not an another AWS or Microsoft, but future for Google looks promising.
The customer line for Google Cloud is short, but brand like Coca-Cola, Spotify and Home Depot are using Google Public Cloud.
Oracle Cloud
Oracle has started the Cloud service with aim to down the AWS on all front. It's all between
Jaff Bezos and
Larry Ellison, the Co-Founder of Oracle, a Database giant. Oracle is calming to provide the lighting fast database service, but they have nothing beyond that. Oracle Linux is not as popular as RedHat and enforcing customer to stick with Oracle Cloud is no gain when the open source platform ready to support the multiple OS structure.
There is growth in Oracle cloud as well, but it's limited to Database cloud only. Customer will go to Oracle if they are using or planning to use the Oracle DB in their Architect.
IBM Bluemix
IBM know for legacy Hardware business, now it's affecting with Cloud Market. Understanding the change, IBM has invested huge amount in the cloud business. IBM claims the IBM Bluemix is easy for developers to build and deploy the apps in cloud. The IBM straight is in Watson, a pioneer Artificial Intelligence in cloud.
Along with IMB Cloud, IBM is focusing on the Cloud consulting service, Installing and Integrating cloud applications. Looking at the IBM growth, it seems very difficult for IBM to compete with AWS or Azure, but some of the offerings from IBM are good to attract the customers.
American Airlines Embarks are joined the hands with IBM cloud to host and handle the business critical applications. These are the good sings for IBM, but long run IBM has tough path ahead.
There are other Cloud Service providers in list, but nothing to impress the enterprise customers. Godaddy sold off the Cloud Computing division. Virtual Platform giant, VMware is nowhere in list, HP is going very slow in Cloud. The old Cloud Giant, Rackspace has shift the service from Cloud provider to Cloud support Service provider.
It shows the Market needs high computing with cheap price and it's hard to bit the AWS at this time.
2017 Q1 results shows AWS will be on top for while.
